Sooryehan Bon Firming cream follow-up and routine thoughts

Empty Sooryehan Bon Firming cream jar with white squashy cute Kitty lamp

Introduction to the follow-up

I've panned my first jar of this (I obviously have a back-up) so I thought I'd do a follow-up post.

Absolutely a non-negotiable product!

I sometimes use other things, really only Illiyoon ATO Ceramide Concentrate cream, but I don't like it as much! It feels oilier, like it doesn't dry as well.

There's nothing wrong with the Illiyoon, I have just come to find that I really miss the cosmetic elegance of more premium products. Plus, ginseng!

Highlights from the first impressions review & updates

Texture

there's an elasticity to the cream, it is exactly the way meringue forms peaks. Have a google if you don't know what I mean by this - I found a picture that compares different meringue textures - the Sooryehan is perhaps between firm and stiff peaks.

Yes: this cream is Michelin starred meringue

Agree!

Performance

I can use less moisturisers - previously I layered them, often 3. I can definitely just use this but since my first review, I've incorporated Sooryehan Hyobidam Fermented Emulsion as a daily cream too.

On closer acquaintance I'm pretty sure it reduced the effect of my sleep creases on my chest and neck. But my neck gets grumpy if I use too much hanbang and I'd been experimenting with some of my other products so I just got irritated. Grr. Not saying it will irritate your sensitive skin, my neck is a law unto itself. I've moved to Sooryehan Hyobidam Fermented Emulsion AM and The Black Serum PM for my neck - I prefer to use these two products, although I might switch back to the Bon AM for my neck, re: sleep creases. The Hyobidam doesn't seem as good for this. Maybe.

Fragrance

The fragrance seems a bit pale for me now - I've acclimated myself to the more complex scents and I barely notice that it even has a fragrance. And I'm disappointed about it!

Packaging

Jar products still annoy me, even as they look lovely and how would you even squeeze it out of a tube?? It's just the hassle of having a clean spatula to hand irks me... Otherwise I enjoy the scooping process.

I have used my panned jar to put a Sulwhasoo Timetreasure honorstige serum sample into so I can use the tiniest bit on my eye area twice day. I don't recommend this, btw, I am apparently reckless when it comes to my face.

If I decide this is a bad idea, I'll go back to using the jar as my daily makeup holder (tubes fit rather nicely in a fan arrangement).

Summing Up

To add absolutely nothing to my other points: it's delightful and delights me every time I use it. Smoothing it on my face is a sensorial feast - you know that look a cat gets when it's getting a really good petting? That is me when I massage this cream in. You'd think the sensation would have diminishing returns as the novelty wears off and yet it does not. Granted, sometimes I appreciate the massage more than others but rarely for more than a few days. I especially enjoy it in the evening because my evening routine is (mostly) less of a rush.

I particularly like to use it with the Hyobidam Fermented emulsion, I feel the Bon has a better surface to be smoothed over when I use the Hyobidam first.

Did I switch to anything else or amend my usage?

Breakout routine

Cosrx 92 and Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Water sleeping mask.

Sadly I think the Chunsam Seonyu Repairing toner broke me out. Twice. I'm testing it a third time when this breakout disappears because I'm not ready to give up. I don't recommend this either!

Sooryehan Hyobidam Fermented Emulsion

Delightful. I feel super fancy using both Sooryehan creams.

Sulwhasoo Timetreasure honorstige serum

Both instead of and as an eye serum.

So, this is blatantly a serum but it's thick. I'd argue thicker than honey. AB Muse mentioned to me that it could be used as a sleeping mask so I tried that, with the Sooryehan Hyobidam Fermented Emulsion as my only moisturiser step (ignoring Sooryehan The Black Serum which actually is a bit moisturising).

Oh yeah. It's good. The fragrance is utterly amazing.

But then what do we expect from a serum that is $800 on the Whoo US site 😂😂😂

Will I repurchase?

Oh hell yes!

I'm strongly tempted by the Hyobidam cream and by the Chunsam cream, although both I think have shea (breakout risk) and the Chunsam toner broke me out anyway (probably).

Plus they're both more expensive!

Would I rather upgrade my other products given the Bon works so well?

Probably but time will tell. Lol

It's a bit boring to just continue my rave but there we are!

Usual routine at present:

  • Chunsam Golden cleansing foam
  • PM: Cosrx AHA Whitehead Power liquid (and I was using some BHA AM but I just haven't had time recently).
  • PM: Decorte Hydra Clarity Treatment Essence
  • AM: 5% niacinamide toner (got this for free from my separate paid blog, so I won't talk about it here).
  • Ginseng First Essence
  • Usually Hyobidam Fermented toner and The History of Whoo Gongjinhyang Seol White Balancer (my skin is dehydrated and needs extra)
  • PM: retinal (usually Geek & Gorgeous)
  • PM: The Black Serum
  • Hyobidam Fermented emulsion
  • Bon Firming Cream
  • SPF: Verdio UV Moisture Gel or Canmake Mermaid Clear (if I'm feeling fancy!)

Thoughts on how my routine might develop

I have a strong desire to try other Sooryehan creams but I think they generally have shea butter in, which I'm pretty sure gives me CCs. Certainly I do on my neck but a few CCs is worth the barrier repair.

However, I've found that I can definitely use ingredients I've previous banned with Sooryehan products so I feel shea might be worth a trial, at least.

I've come back to this draft and thought about it: the Hyobidam cream is nearly twice the price of the Bon and I really do love the Bon and the price of it: for a hanbang cream, it's extremely good value and it just works. Especially in conjunction with the Hyobidam products I'm using.

I might want something richer if I wasn't using the emulsion too but both together is perfect.

There absolutely is an argument for using, for example, the Hyobidam cream at night and on my neck twice a day - but I'll still want the Bon for day time on my face because too much richness messed with sunscreen and makeup for me.

I just get serious FOMO. Don't we all with skincare? I mean, if you're reading this, you probably do too !

I do want a settled routine for my face and I might have achieved that.

Now my face routine is solid, my barrier is solid, I'm doing nightly AHA and retinal, I'm pretty sure I can do a stronger AHA.

But before I do that, I'm going to see if I lose any progress using Sooryehan without retinal. What I tend to notice, when I stop using a retinol type product, is that my eye bag area loses it plumpness.

Other thoughts

I'd like to reach the point where I can use more hanbang for my neck.

At present, if I use too much, my chest gets all red and irritated looking, with some CCs in the middle (although that might be the shea in my moisturiser causing the CCs, but otherwise shea is essential because it reduces actual irritation. With too much hanbang, it just looks irritated).

However, I'm seeing more success with avoiding multiple Sooryehan products and just using the Hyobidam Fermented emulsion at present.

Final Word

One jar down and it's still a total HG for me, especially at the price point!

Comments

  1. That was quick! I know you mentioned that your routine was shorter, but I. am. shocked. at how short that routine is now! What do you do with all that extra time now? 😂

What's the stronger AHA you would consider? Ooor with this solid barrier now, would you consider tret?

I LOVE that you talked about the texture in terms of meringue! It's such a perfect descriptor.

    2. Sorry for not responding! I didn't spot a notification 😭

Ha, if only it came with time saving benefits - it takes the same time as I wait for luxe stuff to dry 🤣

The stronger AHA is Geek & Gorgeous, they have a 10% glycolic plus 2% lactic acid formula.

Ah so I totally would consider Tret but in the UK, it seems to come all packaged in a moisturiser and I wouldn't want to give up my Sooryehan. The next stop for me is the 0.1% retinal also from G&G.

I felt like I hit on a winner with meringue 🤣
